First Lady Florence Harding: Behind the Tragedy and Controversy: Merced Library - MarkScardina - 07-03-2015 Dear friend of the Merced Branch Library: Please join us on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. for a special Merced Arts & Culture Salon / Summer Stride program: First Lady Florence Harding: Behind the Tragedy and Controversy Florence Kling Harding has come down through history as one of our most scorned first ladies. Victimized by caricatures and branded a shrew, she stands at the bottom of historians’ polls, her reputation tarnished by her husband’s scandals despite their joint popularity while in office. Historian and author Katherine Sibley discusses how these depictions have prevented us today from seeing how innovative a first lady Florence Harding really was. Mrs. Harding's story has a local angle: President Warren G. Harding died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco in 1923, and Harding Park is named for him. Signed copies of Dr. Sibley's book will be available for sale. Dr. Sibley is the Director of the American Studies Program at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please attend and give her a warm San Francisco welcome! =Liz= Elizabeth Thacker-Estrada Manager Merced Branch Library San Francisco Public Library 155 Winston Drive San Francisco, CA 94132 (415) 355-5651 (415) 337-8350 (fax) elizabeth.thacker@sfpl.org |
